Since relocating to Chicago I have heard a few things that have truly inspired me and yesterday it came from what I had previously perceived as another pompous white guy. The fact that he was our lawyer (I work for a non-profit real estate developer) should have given some indication he was dedicated to my passion, but still. He looked like Don Johnson 30 years later.

Anyhow his quote was: "Housing is a HAND-UP, not a hand-out." His point? providing someone a place to live is the stepping point for the rest of their lives. You are giving them a hand UP because they have a sanctuary to build a life, plan for work, etc. If they don't have housing none of those things is nearly as important as finding a place to sleep and eat is the primary focus.
